Methodology

Vehicle efficiency comes from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's fuel economy dataset (fueleconomy.gov): combined MPG for gas, hybrid and diesel vehicles, and combined kWh per 100 miles for electric vehicles (measured from the wall, so charging losses are included). When a model year has several versions, headline figures use the median version; every version is listed on the page.

Plug-in hybrids use the EPA utility factor, the estimated share of miles driven on electricity, to blend electricity and gasoline costs. You can change it in the calculator.

Fuel prices: AAA state gas price averages, September 24, 2026. Vehicles that require premium fuel are priced with premium. Electricity: U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), average residential price, June 2026. Public fast charging usually costs more than home charging.

Mileage: 13,500 miles per year by default, close to the average U.S. driver. Your real cost depends on driving style, weather, tires, local prices and your utility plan. All figures are estimates.
